Method

Preparing the Beef

  1. 1

    Form the Patties

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently and shape into two equal patties, about 1/2 pound each.

  2. 2

    Cook the Patties

Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4 to 5 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

Caramelizing the Onions

  1. 3

    Slice the Onion

    Thinly slice the yellow onion.

  2. 4

    Cook the Onions

In a separate skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.

Assembling the Patty Melt

  1. 5

    Prepare the Bread

Spread garlic butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.

  2. 6

    Build the Sandwich

In the same skillet used for the onions, place two slices of rye bread, buttered side down. Place one patty on each slice, top each patty with two slices of Swiss cheese, and then add the caramelized onions.

  3. 7

    Finish the Sandwich

Top with the remaining slices of rye bread, buttered side up. Cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
