Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Squash

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Cut the winter squash in half, remove the seeds, and scoop out the flesh into cubes.

  2. 2

    Cook the Squash

In a pot, add the cubed squash and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for about 10 minutes until just tender. Drain and set aside.

  3. 3

    Make the Candied Mixture

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cook until the mixture is bubbly and slightly thickened.

  4. 4

    Combine and Bake

Add the cooked squash to the skillet and gently toss to coat with the candied mixture. Transfer to a greased baking dish and spread evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the squash is caramelized.

  5. 5

    Add Nuts and Serve

If using, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the top during the last 10 minutes of baking. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
