Prepare the Dates
In a bowl, combine the chopped pitted dates and boiling water. Stir in the baking soda and let it sit for about 15 minutes until it softens.

Make the Cake Batter
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). In a mixing bowl, cream the unsalted butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Bake the Pudding
Pour the batter into a greased baking dish and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

Prepare the Toffee Sauce
In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream and light brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.

Once the pudding is baked, let it cool for a few minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm, drizzled with the toffee sauce.
