Preparing the Crab Puppies
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
Add the Vegetables
Stir in the chopped onion and green bell pepper until well mixed.
Combine Mixtures
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Gently fold in the claw crab meat.
Heat the Oil
In a deep fryer or large pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
Fry the Crab Puppies
Drop spoonfuls of the mixture into the hot oil, frying in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Mix the Sauce
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, relish, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix until smooth.
