Toppings
Method
Prepare the Sausage
- 1
Cook the Sausage
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the Italian sausage. Cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.
Make the Pomodoro Sauce
- 2
- 3
Add Tomatoes and Simmer
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 4
Add Basil
After 15 minutes, stir in the chopped fresh basil and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning as necessary.
Combine and Serve
- 5
Combine Sausage and Sauce
Once the sausage is cooked, drain any excess fat and add the sausage to the pomodoro sauce. Mix well until the sausage is fully incorporated.
- 6
Prepare for Baking
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, spread half of the sausage and pomodoro mixture evenly. Top with half of the shredded mozzarella cheese.
- 7
Layer Roasted Peppers
Add the sliced roasted red peppers on top of the cheese, then layer the remaining sausage and pomodoro mixture over the peppers. Finish with the remaining mozzarella cheese on top.
- 8
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- 9
Serve
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your salsiccia!
