Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring about 4-5 liters of water to a rolling boil. Add salt to the water.

  2. 2

    Cook Spaghetti

Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside, reserving a small cup of pasta water.

Making the Marinara Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions

In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent.

  2. 5

    Add Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the onions and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 6

    Combine Tomatoes and Spices

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the onion and garlic mixture. Stir well.

  4. 7

    Simmer Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. 8

    Adjust Consistency

If the sauce is too thick, add a bit of the reserved pasta water until desired consistency is reached.

Finishing the Dish

  1. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained spaghetti to the marinara sauce and toss to combine, ensuring all the pasta is well coated.

  2. 10

    Serve

Plate the spaghetti and garnish with fresh basil leaves. Serve warm.
