Method

Mussels Preparation

  1. 1

    Clean the Mussels

Rinse the mussels under cold running water, scrubbing the shells with a brush to remove any sand or barnacles. Remove the beards by pulling them off with your fingers.

  2. 2

    Sauté the Base

In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  3. 3

    Add Spice

Sprinkle in the red pepper flakes and stir for another 30 seconds.

  4. 4

    Deglaze with Wine

Pour in 1 cup of dry white wine, scraping any bits from the bottom of the pot. Bring to a simmer for about 2 minutes.

  5. 5

    Add Tomatoes

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, fresh basil, salt, and black pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 5 minutes.

  6. 6

    Cook the Mussels

Add the cleaned mussels to the pot, cover, and cook for about 5-7 minutes until the mussels have opened. Discard any that do not open.

Crostini Preparation

  1. 7

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. 8

    Prepare the Baguette

Slice the French baguette into 1/2 inch thick slices. Arrange them on a baking sheet.

  3. 9

    Oil and Season

Drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the bread slices and sprinkle with garlic powder.

  4. 10

    Toast the Crostini

Bake in the preheated oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
