Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Thaw the phyllo dough according to package instructions. Once thawed, unroll it and cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying out.

  3. 3

    Melt the Butter

In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat. Once melted, set aside to cool slightly.

Make the Filling

  1. 4

    Combine Filling Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, chopped almonds, and ground cinnamon. Mix well.

Assemble the Baklava

  1. 5

    Layer the Phyllo

Brush the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering about 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each layer with butter.

  2. 6

    Add Filling

Spread a third of the nut mixture evenly over the layered phyllo.

  3. 7

    Continue Layering

Layer 4 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, then add another third of the nut mixture. Repeat the process, layering 4 more sheets, adding the final third of the nut mixture, and topping with another 8 sheets of phyllo, each brushed with butter.

  4. 8

    Cut the Baklava

Before baking, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.

Bake the Baklava

  1. 9

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

Make the Syrup

  1. 10

    Combine Syrup Ingredients

In a saucepan, combine granulated sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer for about 10 minutes.

  2. 11

    Cool the Syrup

Remove from heat and allow the syrup to cool slightly.

Finish the Baklava

  1. 12

    Pour Syrup Over Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot baklava.

  2. 13

    Cool and Serve

Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. This will help the syrup soak in and make it sweeter.
