Pita Bread Ingredients

Method

Pita Bread Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (about 110°F) with sugar and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Once the yeast mixture is frothy, pour it into the well of the flour mixture along with the olive oil. Use a wooden spoon to mix until a dough begins to form.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

  6. 6

    Shape the Pitas

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and then roll each ball out into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.

  7. 7

    Second Rise

Cover the rolled-out circles with a kitchen towel and let them rest for about 30 minutes.

  8. 8

    Preheat Oven

While the dough is resting, preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) with a baking stone or a baking sheet inside.

  9. 9

    Bake the Pitas

Carefully place the rested pita rounds onto the hot baking stone or baking sheet. Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until they puff up and are lightly golden.

  10. 10

    Cool and Serve

Remove the pitas from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or store in an airtight container.
