Method
Fried Pie Directions
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk gradually until a dough forms. Knead lightly on a floured surface.
- 2
Roll Out the Dough
Divide the dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Roll each ball into a circle about 6 inches in diameter.
- 3
Add Filling
Place a spoonful of your chosen seasonal fruit filling in the center of each dough circle. Be careful not to overfill.
- 4
Seal the Pies
Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together to seal, and crimp with a fork for a decorative touch.
- 5
Fry the Pies
Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the pies in batches for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- 6
Prepare the Glaze
In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.
- 7
Serve
Drizzle the vanilla glaze over the warm fried pies and serve with whipped cream on the side.
