Pasta

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Water

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of salted water to a rolling boil.

  2. 2

    Cook the Macaroni

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Stir occasionally.

  3. 3

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt the Butter

In the same pot over medium heat, melt the butter.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for about 1 minute to create a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens, approximately 5-7 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and mustard powder until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining and Serving

  1. 8

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is well coated.

  2. 9

    Prepare Optional Topping

If using, mix breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, and paprika in a small bowl.

  3. 10

    Bake (optional)

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.

  4. 11

    Serve

Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve hot.
