Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth and no lumps remain.

Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble.

Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until melted and smooth.

Transfer the pudding to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Allow to cool to room temperature.

Slice the ripe bananas into thin rounds. Open the box of vanilla wafers.

In a large serving dish, layer the bottom with vanilla wafers, followed by a layer of banana slices, and a layer of the pudding. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of pudding on top.
