Brewing Instructions
- 1
Preparation of Ingredients
Start by measuring out all the ingredients needed for brewing the Union Skipjack Pilsner. Ensure that the Pilsner malt and Carafoam malt are crushed to maximize extraction.
- 2
Mashing
In a large brew kettle, bring 20 cups of water to approximately 160°F (71°C). Add the crushed Pilsner malt and Carafoam malt to the water, stirring well to eliminate clumps. Maintain the temperature around 150°F (65°C) for 60 minutes.
- 3
Sparging
After the mashing process, sparge the grains with hot water (around 170°F or 77°C) to extract the sugars. Collect the wort in the brew kettle.
- 4
Boiling
Bring the wort to a rolling boil. Once boiling, add the Saaz hops and boil for 30 minutes. Then add the Hallertau hops and boil for an additional 15 minutes.
- 5
Cooling the Wort
After the boiling process is complete, cool the wort quickly using a wort chiller or an ice bath until it reaches about 70°F (21°C).
- 6
Fermentation
Transfer the cooled wort to a sanitized fermentation vessel. Pitch the yeast by sprinkling it on top of the wort. Seal the vessel with an airlock and place it in a cool, dark area for fermentation for about 1-2 weeks.
- 7
Bottling
Once fermentation is complete, dissolve the priming sugar in a small amount of boiled water and add it to the beer for carbonation. Bottle the beer in sanitized bottles and cap securely.
- 8
Conditioning
Allow the bottled beer to condition at room temperature for about 2 weeks to develop carbonation.
- 9
Enjoy
After conditioning, chill your Union Skipjack Pilsner and serve. Enjoy your homemade brew!
