Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook Spaghetti

Add spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water.

Making the Bolognese Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened.

  2. 5

    Add Garlic

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

  3. 6

    Brown the Meat

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 8 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Wine

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine (if using). Bring to a simmer.

  5. 8

    Season the Sauce

Add oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  6. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce, tossing to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add reserved pasta water a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.

Serving

  1. 10

    Plate the Dish

Serve the spaghetti bolognese hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.
