Creating the Mugs

1. Prepare the Clay

Start by measuring out the right amount of clay using your measuring scale. Aim for around 1 pound (450g) of clay per mug.

2. Center the Clay on the Wheel

Place the measured clay on the pottery wheel and center it by turning the wheel while applying gentle pressure with your hands.

3. Shape the Mug

Once centered, start shaping the clay into a cylindrical form. Gradually pull the clay upwards and outwards to create the walls of the mug, ensuring it's about 1/4 inch thick.

4. Create the Handle

Cut a piece of clay about the size of a small fist. Shape it into a handle by rolling it into a coil and then bending it into a 'C' shape.

5. Attach the Handle

Score and slip the area where you will attach the handle using a clay tool. Press the handle onto the mug and smooth the edges to ensure it is secure.

6. Dry the Mug

Let the mug dry for several hours until it reaches a leather-hard state. This is when it can be handled without deforming.

7. Firing in the Kiln

Once the mug is leather-hard, place it in the kiln and fire according to the clay manufacturer's instructions, usually at around 1850°F (1010°C) for bisque firing.

8. Glazing (Optional)

If desired, apply glaze to the mug's surface using a paintbrush. Allow the glaze to dry before firing it again in the kiln at the specified temperature.

9. Final Firing

Fire the glazed mug in the kiln for the final time, typically at a higher temperature, around 2200°F (1204°C) for stoneware.

10. Cooling and Finishing Touches

After the firing is complete, allow the kiln to cool down completely before removing the mugs. Inspect for any imperfections and make necessary touch-ups.
