Bagel Dough
Everything Bagel Topping
Method
Preparing the Dough
- 1
Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- 2
Mix the Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Mix until a rough dough forms, then transfer to a floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- 4
First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Boiling the Bagels
- 5
Shape the Bagels
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then poke a hole in the center with your finger to shape into bagels.
- 6
Second Rise
Place the shaped bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- 7
Boil the Bagels
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Carefully drop the bagels into the boiling water (2-3 at a time) and boil for about 1 minute on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and return to the baking sheet.
Baking and Topping the Bagels
- 8
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- 9
Prepare the Everything Topping
In a small bowl, mix together sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion flakes, dried garlic flakes, and coarse sea salt.
- 10
Add the Topping
Brush the boiled bagels with water and sprinkle the everything topping generously over the top.
- 11
Bake the Bagels
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bagels are golden brown.
- 12
Cool and Serve
Remove from the oven and let the bagels cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or toasted with cream cheese, butter, or your favorite spread.
