Method
Preparation of Dough
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, instant yeast, salt, and sugar. Whisk together until well combined.
- 2
Add Wet Ingredients
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the warm water and olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. You may add a little flour if the dough is too sticky.
- 4
Let Dough Rise
Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Cooking the Pita Bread
- 5
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). Place a baking stone or a baking sheet inside to heat.
- 6
Shape the Pitas
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into a disc about 1/4 inch thick.
- 7
Bake the Pitas
Carefully place the discs onto the preheated baking stone or sheet. Bake for about 5-7 minutes, or until they puff up and are lightly golden.
- 8
Cool and Serve
Remove the pita bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or store in an airtight container for later use.
