Sushi Rice

Fish and Fillings

Nori and Condiments

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the sushi rice in a sieve and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed sushi rice and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender and water is absorbed.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.

Prepare Fillings

  1. 4

    Slice the Fish

Using a sharp knife, slice the fresh salmon and tuna into thin strips, about ½ cm thick.

  2. 5

    Prepare Vegetables

Peel and slice the cucumber and avocado into thin strips. Set aside.

  3. 6

    Prepare Cream Cheese

Cut the cream cheese into thin strips as well for easy rolling.

Assemble Sushi Rolls

  1. 7

    Lay Out Nori

Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down.

  2. 8

    Spread the Rice

With wet hands, grab a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 2 inches at the top edge.

  3. 9

    Add Fillings

Place the slices of fish, cucumber, avocado, and cream cheese in a line across the center of the rice.

  4. 10

    Roll the Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, carefully roll the sushi away from you, pressing gently but firmly to keep the roll tight. Seal the edge of the nori with a little water.

  5. 11

    Slice the Rolls

Using a sharp knife, slice the rolled sushi into 6-8 pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between slices for clean cuts.

Serve

  1. 12

    Plate the Sushi

Arrange the sliced sushi rolls on a platter. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.
