Sushi Rice

Vegetable Fillings (Optional)

Nori and Garnish

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse and Cook Rice

Rinse 2 cups of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and place in a rice cooker or pot with 2.5 cups of water. Cook according to rice cooker instructions or bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.

  2. 2

    Season Rice

Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl. In a small bowl, mix together rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Pour the vinegar mixture over the rice and gently fold it in using a spatula. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.

Prepare Tuna Filling

  1. 3

    Slice Tuna

Cut 8 ounces of sushi-grade tuna into thin strips or cubes, depending on your preference.

  2. 4

    Mix Marinade

In a bowl, combine sliced tuna with soy sauce, wasabi, and sesame oil. Mix gently to coat the tuna evenly. Let marinate for about 10 minutes.

Prepare Vegetables (If Using)

  1. 5

    Slice Vegetables

Thinly slice the cucumber, avocado, and carrot into long strips for easy rolling.

Assemble Sushi Rolls

  1. 6

    Lay Nori

Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface. Lay one nori sheet shiny side down on the mat.

  2. 7

    Add Sushi Rice

Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then take a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.

  3. 8

    Add Fillings

Place a few strips of marinated tuna and any optional vegetables in a line across the rice.

  4. 9

    Roll Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, begin rolling away from you, pressing gently but firmly to shape the roll. Roll until the edge of the nori is reached, then wet the edge with a little water to seal.

  5. 10

    Slice Rolls

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces. Clean the knife with a damp cloth between cuts for cleaner slices.

Serve

  1. 11

    Garnish and Serve

Sprinkle sesame seeds over the sliced rolls. Serve the sushi with pickled ginger and additional soy sauce on the side.
