Pasta

Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, typically about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Cheese Sauce Preparation

  1. 2

    Make the Roux

In the same pot, melt 1 cup of butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in 0.5 cups of all-purpose flour and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is bubbly and golden.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Slowly whisk in 4 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens and begins to simmer, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 4

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Remove the pot from heat. Stir in 4 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Then, add 1 tsp salt, 0.5 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp mustard powder, and 0.5 tsp paprika. Mix well.

Combine and Bake

  1. 5

    Combine Pasta and Cheese Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until fully coated.

  2. 6

    Prepare Topping

In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs, 0.5 cups of grated Parmesan cheese, and 2 tbs of melted butter until well combined.

  3. 7

    Bake

Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture to a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb topping evenly over the top. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden and crispy.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade mac & cheese!
