Directions
- 1
Preparing the Hanger Steak
Season the hanger steak with salt and black pepper on both sides. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until desired doneness. Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
- 2
Caramelizing the Onions
In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Add the balsamic vinegar towards the end and stir well.
- 3
Assembling the Sandwich
Slice the sub rolls in half and layer the sliced hanger steak, caramelized onions, and provolone cheese inside each roll. Optionally, place the sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- 4
Garnishing
Remove the sandwiches from the oven, garnish with fresh basil, and close the sandwiches. Serve warm.
