Pasta

Cheese Sauce

Toppings (optional)

Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Pasta

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  2. 2

    Drain the Pasta

Once the macaroni is cooked, drain it in a colander and set aside. Do not rinse.

Cheese Sauce Preparation

  1. 3

    Make the Roux

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk constantly for about 1 minute until it forms a paste and turns slightly golden.

  2. 4

    Add Milk

Slowly pour in the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens slightly, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 5

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Remove the pot from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Add salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to taste.

Combine and Serve

  1. 6

    Mix Pasta and Cheese Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is evenly coated.

  2. 7

    Optional Toppings

If desired, mix breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the top of the mac and cheese. You can also bake it in an oven-safe dish at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes to brown the top.

  3. 8

    Serve

Spoon the mac and cheese into bowls and serve warm. Enjoy!
