Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Filling

Layer the slices of cheese, bacon or ham, lettuce, and tomato on two slices of bread. If using tomato, slice it into thin rounds and layer it on top of the lettuce.

Coating

  1. 2

    Make the Egg Mixture

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until well combined.

  2. 3

    Prepare the Flour and Breadcrumbs

Place the all-purpose flour in one shallow dish and the breadcrumbs in another.

Frying

  1. 4

    Assemble the Sandwich

Top the filling with the remaining slices of bread to form two sandwiches.

  2. 5

    Coat the Sandwiches

First, dip each sandwich into the flour to coat lightly. Then, dip into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, coat with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.

  3. 6

    Heat the Butter or Oil

In a large skillet, heat the butter or oil over medium heat until hot but not smoking.

  4. 7

    Fry the Sandwiches

Carefully place the sandwiches in the skillet and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  5. 8

    Drain and Serve

Once cooked, transfer the sandwiches to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Cut in half and serve warm.
