Method

Meatball Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, egg, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Form Meatballs

Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 2.5 cm in diameter. You should get approximately 16 meatballs.

  3. 3

    Cook Meatballs

In a large skillet over medium heat, add a splash of olive oil and brown the meatballs on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions

In the same skillet, add olive oil and sauté the chopped onion over medium heat until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.

  3. 6

    Simmer Meatballs

Add the browned meatballs back to the skillet. Cover and let simmer for 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Sandwich Assembly

  1. 7

    Prepare Rolls

Slice the sub rolls in half lengthwise, without cutting all the way through.

  2. 8

    Add Meatballs and Sauce

Place 4 meatballs in each roll and spoon sauce generously over them.

  3. 9

    Top with Cheese and Basil

Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the meatballs and add fresh basil leaves.

  4. 10

    Melt Cheese

Place the sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  5. 11

    Serve

Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve hot.
