Main Ingredients

For Mornay Sauce

Method

Prepare Mornay Sauce

  1. 1

    Make the Roux

In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until the mixture is bubbly and slightly golden.

  2. 2

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue to cook for about 5-7 minutes until the sauce thickens.

  3. 3

    Incorporate Cheese and Seasonings

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the Gruyère cheese. Add nutmeg, salt, and black pepper to taste. Mix until the cheese is fully melted and incorporated.

Assemble Croque Monsieur

  1. 4

    Prepare the Bread

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Lay out 4 slices of bread on a clean surface and spread Dijon mustard on each slice.

  2. 5

    Layer Ham and Cheese

On top of the mustard, place a slice of ham followed by a generous amount of Gruyère cheese. Top with another slice of bread to form a sandwich.

  3. 6

    Add Mornay Sauce

Place the assembled sandwiches on a baking sheet. Pour the prepared Mornay sauce generously over each sandwich, ensuring they are well covered.

  4. 7

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and bubbling.

  5. 8

    Serve with Baby Lettuces

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm alongside a handful of baby lettuces.
