Method

Prepare

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a highball or Collins glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill.

  2. 2

    Juice citrus

If not already done, squeeze fresh lime and orange to yield the required amounts. Fresh juice gives best balance and brightness.

Mixing

  1. 3

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (about 3/4 full). Add 2 oz gin, 0.5 oz cherry brandy, 0.5 oz Cointreau (or triple sec), 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, 2 oz fresh orange juice, 0.5 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  2. 4

Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  3. 5

Discard ice or water from the chilled glass if used. Fill the glass with fresh ice (crushed or cubed, about 3/4 full). Strain the shaken mixture into the prepared glass.

Finish & Garnish

  1. 6

Float 0.25–0.5 oz cherry brandy gently on top: pour it slowly over the back of a bar spoon held just above the drink surface so it layers on top.

  2. 7

Garnish with one maraschino cherry and an orange slice or twist. Optionally add a straw and serve immediately.
