Lentils and Rice

Caramelized Onions

Garnishes (optional)

Method

Prepare the Caramelized Onions

  1. 1

    Cook Onions

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and salt, and sauté for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and golden brown.

  2. 2

    Continue Cooking

Lower the heat to medium-low and cook the onions for an additional 20-30 minutes, stirring frequently, until they are deeply caramelized and a rich brown color.

Cook Lentils and Rice

  1. 3

    Rinse Lentils and Rice

Rinse the French lentils and long-grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear.

  2. 4

    Combine Ingredients

In a large pot, combine the rinsed lentils, rice, vegetable broth or water, salt, and black pepper.

  3. 5

    Bring to a Boil

Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.

  4. 6

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils and rice are tender and the liquid is absorbed.

Combine and Serve

  1. 7

    Mix Together

Once the lentils and rice are cooked, gently fluff them with a fork and then mix in the caramelized onions.

  2. 8

    Garnish

If desired, garnish the Mjadarah with chopped fresh parsley and serve with lemon wedges on the side.

  3. 9

    Serve

Spoon the large Mjadarah into serving dishes and enjoy!
