Fillo Dough Layering

Method

Preparation of Nut Filling

  1. 1

    Make the Nut Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, pistachios, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well until evenly combined.

Fillo Dough Assembly

  1. 2

    Prepare Fillo Dough

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt the unsalted butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Take the fillo dough out of the package and lay it flat on a clean, dry surface.

  2. 3

    Layer Fillo Dough

Brush a large baking dish (approximately 15x10 inches) with melted butter. Lay one sheet of fillo dough in the dish and brush it lightly with butter. Repeat this process, layering at least 8 sheets, brushing each layer with butter.

  3. 4

    Add Nut Filling

Spread a generous portion of the nut mixture evenly over the layered fillo dough. Continue layering with more fillo sheets, brushing each with melted butter, for another 5-7 sheets.

Baking

  1. 5

    Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

Making the Syrup

  1. 6

    Prepare Syrup

While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar, honey, vanilla extract, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.

Finishing Touches

  1. 7

    Add Syrup to Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the baklava. Allow it to cool completely before cutting into pieces.
