Pita Bread

Method

Making the Dough

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, mix warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Mix until a rough dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shaping and Baking

  1. 5

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking stone or baking sheet inside to heat.

  2. 6

    Shape Pita Bread

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into a circle about 1/4-inch thick.

  3. 7

    Bake Pita Bread

Carefully place the flattened dough on the hot baking stone or sheet. Bake for 5-7 minutes until puffed and lightly golden. Repeat with remaining dough.

  4. 8

    Cool and Serve

Remove the pita bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
