Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

    Prepare the Baking Dish

Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with some melted butter.

  3. 3

    Melt the Butter

In a small saucepan, melt 1 cup of unsalted butter over low heat and set aside.

Nut Filling

  1. 4

    Combine the Nut Filling

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of chopped walnuts, 1 cup of chopped almonds, and 1 tsp of ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.

Assembling Baklava

  1. 5

    Layer the Filo Pastry

Take one sheet of filo pastry and place it in the prepared baking dish. Brush it lightly with melted butter. Repeat this process with about 8 sheets of filo, brushing each layer with butter.

  2. 6

    Add the Nut Mixture

Spread a layer of the nut filling evenly over the layered filo. Repeat the process of layering 4 more sheets of filo brushed with butter, then add another layer of nuts. Continue this process until all nuts are used.

  3. 7

    Finish with Filo

Top with remaining filo sheets, brushing each with butter. Ensure the top layer has at least 8 sheets for a crispy texture.

  4. 8

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.

Baking

  1. 9

    Bake the Baklava

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crisp.

Making the Syrup

  1. 10

    Prepare the Syrup

In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, 0.5 cup of water, and 0.5 cup of honey. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir in 1 tsp of vanilla extract and remove from heat.

Finishing Touches

  1. 11

    Pour the Syrup

Once the baklava is baked, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the baklava. Let it soak for at least 4 hours before serving.
