Method

Cooking the Kalua Pig

  1. 1

    Prepare the Pork

Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder and rub it all over with sea salt and liquid smoke. Make sure to cover the entire surface.

  2. 2

    Cook the Pork

Place the seasoned pork shoulder in a slow cooker or a large pot. If using a slow cooker, set it on low and cook for 10-12 hours. If using a pot, cover and simmer on low heat for about 4-5 hours, or until the pork is tender and can be easily shredded.

  3. 3

    Shred the Pork

Once the pork is cooked, remove it from the slow cooker or pot. Let it rest for a few minutes, then shred it with two forks, discarding any large pieces of fat.

Cooking the Cabbage

  1. 4

    Prepare the Cabbage and Onion

While the pork is cooking, chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces and slice the onion thinly. Mince the garlic.

  2. 5

    Cook the Cabbage

In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion becomes translucent. Then, add the chopped cabbage and season with black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10-15 minutes until the cabbage is wilted and tender.

Serving the Dish

  1. 6

    Plate the Dish

Serve the shredded Kalua pig on a plate alongside the sautéed cabbage. If desired, serve over cooked rice and drizzle with soy sauce. Garnish with chopped green onions.

  2. 7

    Enjoy

Enjoy your Kalua Pig with Cabbage Plate!
