Gravy

Method

Patties

  1. 1

    Prepare the Patty Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and the egg. Mix well with your hands until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

  2. 2

    Form the Patties

Divide the mixture into three equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1 inch thick.

  3. 3

    Cook the Patties

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Gravy

  1. 4

    Make the Gravy

In the same skillet used for the patties, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

  2. 5

    Create a Roux

Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine. Cook for about 1 minute to form a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Broth

Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

  4. 7

    Combine with Patties

Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Let them simmer together for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Serve

  1. 8

    Prepare the Plate

On a plate, serve the hamburger steaks with a generous amount of gravy on top. Add a side of mashed potatoes and steamed green beans.
