Prepare the Ingredients
Wash the fresh basil leaves thoroughly and pat them dry with a clean towel. Peel the garlic cloves and set aside. Peel and chop the red onion into small pieces. Zest the lemon to collect about 1 teaspoon of zest.
Blending

Blend the Base Ingredients
In a food processor, combine the fresh basil leaves, garlic cloves, chopped red onion, and lemon zest. Pulse a few times until the ingredients are roughly chopped.

Add Nuts and Cheese
Add the pine nuts and grated Parmesan cheese to the food processor. Blend until the mixture is well combined but still has some texture.

Season to Taste
Once the pesto is blended, taste it and season with salt and black pepper as desired. Blend again briefly to incorporate the seasonings.
Serving

Serve the Pesto
Transfer the pesto to a serving dish or an airtight container. Pesto can be used immediately or stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Enjoy with pasta, sandwiches, or as a dip!
