Main Ingredients

Comeback Sauce

Method

Preparing the Comeback Sauce

  1. 1

    Mix the Sauce Ingredients

In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully combined and set aside.

Cooking the Patty Melt

  1. 2

    Sauté the Onions

Slice the medium onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onion and sauté until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  2. 3

    Form the Beef Patties

In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide the meat into 4 equal portions and shape them into burger patties.

  3. 4

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet over medium-high heat, add another tablespoon of butter. Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese and a slice of pepper jack cheese on each patty, allowing them to melt.

  4. 5

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Spread a generous amount of the Comeback sauce on one side of each slice of sourdough bread. Place a cooked patty with melted cheese on one slice, followed by sautéed onions. Top with another slice of bread, sauce side down.

  5. 6

    Grill the Sandwiches

In the skillet, add the remaining butter. Grill the sandwiches over medium heat until the bread is golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press down gently with a spatula for better contact.

  6. 7

    Serve

Once golden brown, remove from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve warm with extra Comeback sauce on the side.
