Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the yeast

In a small bowl, combine the warm milk (about 110°F or 43°C) with the active dry yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix dry ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, salt, and ground cardamom.

  3. 3

    Combine wet ingredients

In another bowl, melt the unsalted butter, let it cool slightly, and then add the eggs, vanilla extract, and the activated yeast mixture. Mix well.

  4. 4

    Form the dough

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Stir until combined, then knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 6

    Prepare filling

In a mixing bowl, combine the raisins, chopped almonds, candied orange peel, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Assembling the Bread

  1. 7

    Shape the dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle, about 1/2 inch thick.

  2. 8

    Add the filling

Evenly spread the filling mixture over the surface of the rolled-out dough.

  3. 9

    Roll the dough

Starting from one long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log shape, ensuring the filling stays inside.

  4. 10

    Shape into wreath

Bring the ends of the rolled dough together to form a circle and pinch to seal. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  5. 11

    Second rise

Cover the wreath with a towel and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.

Baking and Finishing

  1. 12

    Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 13

    Apply egg wash

Brush the top of the wreath with the egg wash and sprinkle with sliced almonds.

  3. 14

    Bake the bread

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

  4. 15

    Cool and serve

Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
