Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Wash the Rice

Rinse the basmati rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Vegetables

Chop all the vegetables (carrot, bell pepper, cauliflower, potato) into small, even-sized pieces for uniform cooking.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté the Aromatics

In a large pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté until golden brown. Stir in the minced garlic and ginger, cooking for an additional minute.

  2. 4

    Cook the Vegetables

Add the diced carrot, green peas, bell pepper, cauliflower, and potato to the pot. Stir well and cook for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender.

  3. 5

    Add Spices

Sprinkle in the cumin seeds, coriander powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly and cook for another 2 minutes to toast the spices.

  4. 6

    Add Rice and Water

Add the soaked and drained basmati rice to the pot. Pour in 4 cups of water and stir gently to combine all ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil.

  5. 7

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and water is absorbed.

  6. 8

    Fluff and Serve

Turn off the heat and let the biryani sit for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice gently with a fork. Stir in the chopped cilantro and lemon juice before serving.
