Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse Lentils and Peas

Thoroughly rinse the split yellow peas and red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Chop Vegetables

Chop the onion and tomato into small pieces. Set aside for later use.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook Base Ingredients

In a large pot, combine the rinsed split yellow peas, red lentils, chopped onion, chopped tomato, and water. Bring to a boil over high heat.

  2. 4

    Add Spices

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low. Add cumin seeds, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.

  3. 5

    Simmer the Soup

Cover the pot and let the soup simmer for about 30-35 minutes, or until the peas and lentils are tender. Stir occasionally and add more water if needed to maintain a soup-like consistency.

  4. 6

    Finish with Garam Masala

Once the lentils and peas are cooked, stir in the garam masala and lemon juice. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

Serving

  1. 7

    Garnish and Serve

Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with freshly chopped cilantro. Serve hot with naan or rice if desired.
