Tamale Dough
Method
Preparing the Tamales
- 1
Soak Corn Husks
Soak the corn husks in warm water for about 30 minutes to soften them. Drain and set aside.
- 2
Make the Dough
In a large bowl, mix the masa harina, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, cream the vegetable shortening until fluffy. Gradually add the masa mixture and vegetable broth, mixing until smooth.
- 3
Assemble the Tamales
Take a soaked corn husk and spread about 1/4 cup of the masa dough onto the center, leaving space on the sides. Add your desired filling (like shredded chicken, pork, cheese, or vegetables) in the middle. Fold the sides of the husk over the filling and then fold the bottom up to seal.
- 4
Steam the Tamales
Place the tamales upright in a steamer pot. Steam for about 1 to 1.5 hours, adding water as necessary. Make sure the tamales are fully cooked and the dough is firm.
- 5
Serve
Remove from the steamer and let cool slightly. Serve with salsa or your favorite sauce.
