Preparation Instructions

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.

  2. 2

    Add Fat

Cut in the shortening or lard until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Mix with Water

Gradually add warm water to the mixture, stirring until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.

  5. 5

    Rest the Dough

Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  6. 6

    Roll and Cut

Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into squares or triangles.

  7. 7

    Fry the Sopaipillas

Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the sopaipillas in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

  8. 8

    Drain and Serve

Remove the sopaipillas from the oil and drain them on paper towels. Serve hot with honey drizzled on top.
