Method
Preparation
- 1
For Whole Beans
1. Rinse the pinto beans under cold water and place them in a large pot. Add the water or vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours or until the beans are tender. Add salt to taste during the last 10 minutes of cooking.

For Refried Beans
1. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. 2. Stir in minced garlic and cumin powder, and cook for an additional minute. 3. Add cooked pinto beans (drained if necessary) and some of the cooking liquid. Mash the beans with a fork or potato masher to your desired consistency. Cook for 5-10 minutes, adding more liquid if needed. Season with salt to taste.

Optional Black Beans Version
If using black beans for variety, follow the same procedure as for refried pinto beans, substituting black beans for pinto beans.
