Frico (Caramelized Cheese)

Pickled Red Onions

Detroit Style Marinara Sauce

Method

Meatballs

  1. 1

    Prepare the Meatball Mixture

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, egg, salt, black pepper, and chopped parsley. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Meatballs

Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs, approximately 1.5 inches in diameter. Place the meatballs on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

  3. 3

    Bake the Meatballs

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes or until they are cooked through and browned on the outside.

Frico (Caramelized Cheese)

  1. 4

    Make the Frico

While the meatballs are baking, heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle shredded Parmesan cheese in a thin layer, covering the bottom of the skillet. Cook for 3-5 minutes until the cheese melts and turns golden brown. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly, then break it into pieces.

Pickled Red Onions

  1. 5

    Prepare the Pickling Solution

In a small saucepan, combine apple cider vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar and salt dissolve. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  2. 6

    Pickle the Onions

Place the thinly sliced red onions into a jar or bowl and pour the pickling solution over them. Let them sit for at least 15 minutes to pickle.

Detroit Style Marinara Sauce

  1. 7

    Prepare the Marinara Sauce

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and fresh basil. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
