Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with salt. Cook the onions, stirring frequently, for about 30-40 minutes until they are deeply caramelized and golden brown. Reduce the heat if necessary to avoid burning.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Add Broth and Seasonings

Once the onions are caramelized, add the beef broth, thyme, black pepper, and bay leaves. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  2. 3

    Prepare the Bread

While the soup is simmering, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the slices of French bread on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for about 10 minutes until they are golden and crispy.

Final Assembly

  1. 4

    Serve the Soup

Remove the bay leaves from the soup and ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of toasted French bread on top of each bowl, then sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese generously over the bread.

  2. 5

    Broil the Cheese

Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil them in the oven for about 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.

  3. 6

    Enjoy

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve hot and enjoy your delicious French onion soup!
