Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Wild Rice

Start by rinsing the wild rice under cold water in a fine mesh strainer to remove any debris and excess starch.

  2. 2

    Chop the Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, dice the carrot and celery, and mince the garlic.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, diced carrot, and diced celery. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables have softened.

  2. 4

    Add Garlic and Spices

Stir in the minced garlic, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

  3. 5

    Cook the Wild Rice

Add the rinsed wild rice to the saucepan, followed by the water or vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 45 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed the liquid.

Finishing Touches

  1. 6

    Stir in Optional Add-ins

Once the rice is cooked, remove it from heat. If desired, stir in chopped nuts, dried cranberries or raisins, and fresh parsley for added flavor and texture.

  2. 7

    Fluff and Serve

Use a fork to fluff the wild rice pilaf before serving. Adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper, if necessary.
