Method
Preparing the Prime Rib
- 1
Season the Roast
Rub the prime rib roast with olive oil, ensuring it is evenly coated. Then, generously season all sides of the roast with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before cooking.
- 2
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). This high temperature will help create a crust on the outside of the roast.
- 3
Roast the Prime Rib
Place the seasoned prime rib in a roasting pan, bone side down. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the roast. Roast in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 325°F (163°C) and continue roasting until the internal temperature reaches your desired doneness (125°F for rare, 135°F for medium-rare, 145°F for medium). This may take about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the size of your roast.
- 4
Rest the Roast
Once the desired temperature is reached, remove the roast from the oven and cover it loosely with aluminum foil. Let it rest for at least 20 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.
Serving
- 5
Slice and Serve
Carefully slice the prime rib into thick slices using a sharp knife. Serve with beef broth on the side for dipping, and offer optional accompaniments like horseradish sauce, creamy horseradish sauce, roasted vegetables, and fresh herbs.
