Bao Bun Dough

Method

Preparing the Bao Bun Dough

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Mixtures

Once the yeast is frothy, pour it into the flour mixture along with the vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Preparing the Fillings

  1. 6

    Prepare the Pork Filling

If using pulled pork, ensure it is warmed and mixed with hoisin sauce. Set aside.

  2. 7

    Prepare the Tofu Filling

If using crispy tofu, make sure it is diced into small cubes and ready for assembly.

  3. 8

    Prep Veggies

Thinly slice the cucumber and shred the carrot. Chop the cilantro, and have all ingredients ready for assembling the buns.

Assembling the Bao Buns

  1. 9

    Shape the Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions (about 12 pieces). Roll each piece into a ball and flatten it into a disc.

  2. 10

    Fill the Buns

Take each disc, place a spoonful of your choice of filling (pulled pork or crispy tofu) in the center, then fold the edges up to the center and pinch to seal.

  3. 11

    Steam the Buns

Place the filled buns in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper. Steam for 15-20 minutes until fluffy and cooked through.
