Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes or until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Add the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 6

    Prepare Fillings

While the dough is rising, prepare your fillings. For pulled pork, heat and shred the meat. For teriyaki chicken, cook chicken in teriyaki sauce until fully cooked and shred. For vegetable stir-fry, sauté a mix of your favorite vegetables in soy sauce and sesame oil.

Bun Assembly and Cooking

  1. 7

    Shape the Buns

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 10 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and then flatten slightly.

  2. 8

    Fill the Buns

Place a tablespoon of your chosen filling in the center of each flattened dough circle. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch to seal.

  3. 9

    Second Rise

Let the filled buns rest for an additional 30 minutes covered with a cloth.

  4. 10

    Steam the Buns

Prepare a steamer and steam the buns for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are fluffy and cooked through.

Serving

  1. 11

    Garnish and Serve

Once steamed, remove the buns from the steamer and let them cool slightly. Garnish with chopped green onions, sesame seeds, and serve with Sriracha sauce on the side.
