Method

For the Cake

  1. 1

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). On a clean surface, unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.

  2. 2

    Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, orange juice, orange zest, eggs, baking powder, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until well combined.

  3. 3

    Layer the Phyllo Dough

Take one sheet of phyllo dough, brush it with melted butter, and lay it in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Repeat this process layering half of the phyllo sheets in the dish.

  4. 4

    Add the Wet Mixture

Pour the wet mixture evenly over the layered phyllo dough.

  5. 5

    Top with Remaining Phyllo

Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top of the wet mixture, brushing each sheet with butter.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cake

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and crispy on top.

For the Syrup

  1. 7

    Prepare the Syrup

While the cake is baking, combine water, granulated sugar, honey, and orange zest in a saucepan over medium heat.

  2. 8

    Simmer the Syrup

Stir until the sugar dissolves, then bring to a simmer. Allow it to simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.

  3. 9

    Pour Syrup Over Cake

Once the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the warm cake.

  4. 10

    Cool and Serve

Allow the cake to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.
