Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Macaroni

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Meat Sauce Preparation

  1. 2

    Brown the Meat

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat.

  2. 3

    Add Vegetables

Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.

  3. 4

    Mix in Tomatoes and Herbs

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Let simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Cheese Mixture Preparation

  1. 5

    Prepare the Cheese Mixture

In a large bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well until smooth.

Assembling the Pastichio

  1. 6

    Layer the Ingredients

In a greased baking dish, layer half of the cooked macaroni, half of the meat sauce, and half of the cheese mixture. Repeat the layers.

  2. 7

    Top with Cheese and Breadcrumbs

Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top layer. In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the cheese.

Baking

  1. 8

    Bake the Pastichio

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the assembled pastichio for 30-35 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top.

  2. 9

    Serve

Let the pastichio cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm, garnished with additional Parmesan if desired.
