Filling

Phyllo Dough

Syrup

Method

Preparation of Filling

  1. 1

    Prepare the Nut Filling

In a food processor, pulse the walnuts until finely chopped. In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon. Mix well to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.

  2. 2

    Melt the Butter

In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Layering Phyllo Dough

  1. 3

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Unroll the phyllo dough carefully on a clean surface. Cover with a damp kitchen towel to prevent it from drying out.

  2. 4

    Layer the Dough

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush it with butter. Repeat this process, layering and buttering each sheet, until you have 8 sheets layered.

  3. 5

    Add the Filling

Spread a thin layer of the walnut filling over the layered phyllo. Continue to layer phyllo sheets (about 4-5) and then add more filling. Repeat this process until all the filling is used, finishing with a top layer of 8 phyllo sheets.

Baking

  1. 6

    Bake the Baklava

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.

Preparing the Syrup

  1. 7

    Make the Syrup

In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, honey, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Finishing Touches

  1. 8

    Pour the Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot baklava. Allow it to soak for several hours or overnight before serving.
