Custard Base
Caramel Sauce
Method
Preparing the Caramel
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a small saucepan, combine 3 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Cook over medium heat, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves.
- 2
Caramelize the Sugar
Continue cooking without stirring until the mixture turns a golden brown color. Remove from heat immediately to prevent burning.
- 3
Coat the Pan
Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of a flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to harden.
Making the Custard
- 4
- 5
Pour the Custard
Carefully pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the flan mold or ramekins.
Baking the Flan
- 6
Set Up the Water Bath
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold or ramekins in a larger baking dish and fill the baking dish with hot water halfway up the sides of the flan mold.
- 7
Bake the Flan
Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted comes out clean.
- 8
Cool and Chill
Remove the flan from the oven and the water bath. Let it cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
Serving the Flan
- 9
Unmold the Flan
To unmold, run a knife around the edges of the flan. Invert onto a serving plate and let the caramel sauce drizzle over the flan.
- 10
Serve
Slice the flan and serve chilled. Enjoy the creamy texture and sweet caramel flavor!
